We all are already aware that diamond is known to be the hardest form of carbon. But no matter how hard, durable or tough a diamond might be, Diamonds will get damaged if they’re hit at the wrong angle, especially around points and thin areas. Hence every diamond needs care. Our Gem experts have put together a guide to care for your diamonds and diamond jewellery.

GENERAL CARE TIPS FOR DIAMOND JEWELLERY

  • When handling diamond jewellery, use a cloth or glove as our fingers provide enough oil from your skin which alters diamonds' look.

  • Ziploc bags are small, light, and portable, making them perfect for storing your jewellery.

  • While storing, wrap them in separate bags and always place anti-tarnish strips. This will help keep the jewellery moisture free and allow their polish to last longer.

  • When segregating jewellery, keep solitaires and small settings separately.

  • For storing diamond jewellery, always use a fabric lined box specially made for diamond jewellery.

  • When handling a diamond jewellery, if you come across a loose setting, then take the jewellery piece for repair to your jeweler. And in such cases, please avoid doing the cleaning by yourself.

  • Avoid wearing diamond jewellery while doing rough work or laborious work.

  • Do not allow your diamond jewellery to come in contact with a chlorine bleach. It can damage and discolor the mounting.

  • Visit your professional jeweler and request for a product check and cleaning once every 8 months. Not only get your jewellery checked but also request for an ultrasonic cleaning to remove encrusted dirt on diamonds.

  • When travelling with diamond jewellery, carry them in specially made jewellery travel cases.

It is not always possible to wear gloves or keep taking your jewellery off. So, eventually, jewellery does get dirty. Some of most simple tips are shared

  • Use a mild detergent and create a warm solution. Leave your jewellery in it. Take it out after a few minutes and scrub it gently with a soft brush. Place the jewellery in a strainer and rinse it with warm water. Take it out and pat it dry with a soft cloth. Make sure that it is a lint-free cloth.

  • Make a mild solution using one-part mild dishwashing detergent and four-parts cold water. Put your jewellery in this solution and leave it there for some time. Pick up the jewellery and clean around the edges with a soft brush. Rinse the jewellery and leave it to drain on tissue paper.

  • Get any brand certified jewellery cleaning liquids, read the instructions carefully. Don't ever skip this step. The instructions might contain warnings and exceptions. Be careful to note these points. Now, clean your jewellery as instructed.

  • Ammonia solutions are effective in cleaning diamond jewellery without causing damage. Pour a little in a cup and leave your jewellery in it for a few minutes. Make sure it is a mild solution (If in doubt don't use this method). Remove the jewellery from the cup and put it in a strainer. Rinse it and pat it dry with a soft cloth.
