Jewellery is one of our most cherished possessions. We associate certain pieces with some of the happiest moments in our lives. And so, every jewellery piece deserves proper care.
Here are some tips on how to care in general for different types of jewellery:
Plain gold jewellery should be stored separately preferably lined with tissue or velvet lined pouches of boxes
Gold jewellery can be worn daily and can be washed and cleaned regularly to maintain its shine and remove any accumulated dirt or sweat.
When handling 22K jewellery, handle with care as it is softer than 18K and 14k jewellery.
At any point you need professional servicing, contact your jeweller.
Gemstone can chip, break and crack on impact. Wear Gemstone jewellery cautiously to avoid losing the stones or dislodging them. Avoid wearing jewellery when working with water, heat, entering swimming pool or during strenuous activities
Gemstones are softer than diamonds, thus needing extra care while wearing as well as storing. Rubies and emeralds are fragile. They should always be cleaned only with a dry, soft cotton cloth.
Avoid using a soapy water bath for them. Emeralds specially have an oiled coating that can be stripped away by soaps.
Use of double-lined fabric pouches or jewellery boxes with velvet-lined compartments to keep your items separated is advisable when storing emerald or ruby jewelleries.
Jewellers use ultrasonic cleaners with special cleaning solutions to remove all filmy products and debris. Certain gemstones and all pearls should never be cleaned by this method.
Always preserve pearls in a soft cloth or tissue.
Store each pearl jewellery individually because the friction between the pearls can scratch each other, thus leading to a loss in lustre.
Avoid putting pearls or any other organic material beads in plastic bags.
Pearls and other strung beads should never be bathed in any kind of liquid. Use of a clean, dry, soft, white cotton cloth to gently wipe down the individual pearls or beads. Do not stretch the stringing cord.
Pearl necklaces need to be re-strung from time to time as it weakens.
Enamels can chip off in course of time and need to be given to the concerned jeweller to fix.
Use liquid cleaning solutions only suggested by your jeweller when cleaning Enamel jewellery.
Avoid using enamel jewellery near extreme heat or temperature and also keep it away from chemicals.
After every use, wipe the jewellery with a lint free cloth, only the metal part. Do not use a polishing cloth on pearls or gemstones or on enamel.
Whenever storing jewellery, always store them by wrapping in soft cloth or tissue and keep them separately.
While storing your enamel jewellery; make sure to put it down gently on a flat soft, cloth-lined jewellery box to avoid any abrasion or chipping. This is especially important for elaborate pieces such as necklaces, bracelets, cocktail, earring, ring and brooches.
